More From The Forest Than Just Wood

Forests have traditionally been shown as a place to harvest wood. This image is changing. We know that goods collected from the forest can be much more than that. Non-timber forest products (NTFPs) are those other goods (beyond timber and wood) that are harvested and sold. Some examples include: mushrooms, berries, syrups, nuts, medicinal plants, and, craft and landscaping materials.

The Canadian Model Forest Network and its members are actively involved in this growing market. We are giving support to communities looking for new opportunities. The CMFN wrote a report outlining NTFP activities in Canada, particularly through our members. It also expressed the challenges with marketing and creating demand for these products. In addition, there is a need for training and sharing of information. As a response, the CMFN supported Canadian workshops to discuss the issues and find solutions. We create a place for businesspeople, current and future, to talk and share their experiences. Drawing on the workshop discussions, a summary report has been developed. This generally describes the information covered during these sessions. This will provide knowledge and expertise to others pursuing similar activities.
