Through research and testing, the members of the Canadian Model Forest Network and their partners have been at the forefront of developing forestry practices. These activities guide management in a way that benefits forest managers, the environment, and the communities whose livelihoods depend on the forest. One of the CMFNs most successful programs within Forestry practice has been private land stewardship.

Private Land Stewardship

In Canada, forests are owned by either the crown or by private landowners. Most of this private land is located in the country's southern forest regions. A large proportion of the forest is divided into small parcels managed by individual woodlot owners. In addition to providing economic benefits, these woodlots provide wildlife habitat, spiritual values and recreational opportunities. They also contribute to the maintenance of biodiversity and the supply of clean water to nearby communities.
