The Lake Abitibi Model Forest has been contracted to carry out the FireSmart program in the City of Timmins, which has one of the largest land masses among North American municipalities. There are numerous cottage development areas within city boundaries, as well as subdivisions in forested areas within the city core. The primary purpose of the contract with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (OMNR) is to establish FireSmart committees at individual rural subdivisions that will take ownership of planning how to lessen wildfire risk in their areas. The LAMF will also be working with the fire departments of the Town of Iroquois Falls and possibly the Township of Black River—Matheson.
