Non-timber Forest Products

Goal

To help communities understand the social, economic and cultural benefits of non-timber forest products and identify opportunities for future economic development for these commodities in this growing sector of the forest industry.

Description

Non-Timber Forest ProductsThe Canadian Model Forest Network sees more than just trees in Canada’s forests: non-timber forest product development has the potential to generate sustainable, renewable economic opportunities in Canada’s forest-based communities.

Non-Timber Forest ProductsMushrooms, berries, plant and animal products, nuts, seeds, medicinal plants, peat – these products and more may be harvested from the forest to produce a wide range of goods, including food and food additives, nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, gardening and landscaping material, and to develop craft industries and ecotourism services. Cultivating economic opportunities from non-timber forest resources requires the carefully integrated management of multiple values, including wildlife habitat and water and air purification.
