Local Level Indicators > Local Level Indicator Database

The pursuit of sustainable forest management (SFM) requires the monitoring of effects resulting from forest management practices and activities. Local level indicators, which are developed to suit local and regional conditions, provide the framework for monitoring on-the-ground changes and assessing their influence on the many components of SFM.

Canada’s Model Forests have been involved in selecting, measuring and reporting on local level indicators since 1997. Each Model Forest has developed a suite of local level indicators of SFM suited to its particular socio-economic, cultural and environmental conditions. Model Forests have used a variety of approaches in the identification, selection and assessment of indicators. The diversity among Model Forests is a reflection of local circumstances and innovation resulting from different groups working toward a common goal.

As a common starting point, each Model Forest used Canada’s six criteria (and associated elements) for SFM as defined by the Canadian Council of Forest Ministers to organize and structure their suite of indicators. A database of local level indicators developed by the Model Forests can be accessed below via one of three search methods: by criteria, by Model Forest and by keyword search

The database showcases indicators developed by Canada’s Model Forests, providing an opportunity for users to select and adopt indicators that may be applicable to their local forests. The database also contains background information for each indicator, including the scale at which the indicator is intended to be applied, the measurement interval, the unit of measure and the source of the data used to measure the indicator.

For more detail about any of the indicators, please contact the relevant Model Forest. The complete history of the local level indicators initiative, as well as the process of developing the indicators in each Model Forest, and a glossary of terms relevant to local level indicators, can be found in the User’s Guide to Local Level Indicators.
