Climate Change

Climate ChangeDue to the potential for rapid changes in forest ecosystems and wildlife habitat, the release of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere has important implications for the future of Canada’s forests and the communities that depend on them.

The Climate Change Strategic Initiative (CCSI) provides an opportunity for the research community and the Canadian Model Forest Network to examine the effects of climate change on individual Model Forests and smaller forest-dependent communities. The CCSI is examining vulnerability to the impacts of climate change, how vulnerability can be evaluated and how forest managers and communities can prepare themselves to manage and respond to these impacts.

Climate ChangeCommunity workbooks have been developed to assess vulnerability and adaptation to climate change. These workbooks will be tested in pilot sites across Canada. Following the testing phase, the workbooks will be distributed to all Model Forests and to other locations across the country. The workbooks will lead to the development of a national methodology that measures community vulnerability and the ability of communities to respond to the effects of climate change.

The CCSI steering committee is comprised of Model Forest General Managers and members of the Canadian Model Forest Network Secretariat.
