Description Forest sector leaders throughout the world’s northern forest region strive for healthy, sustainable forests and vibrant, diversified forest-based economies. They achieve these goals by implementing innovative solutions to problems facing the planet’s boreal forests. An international Circumboreal initiative is bringing likeminded nations together, and the Canadian Model Forest Network is taking Canadian perspectives on managing the boreal forest to the international stage. The Canadian Model Forest Network is working with its counterparts through the International Model Forest Network on a national initiative that will incorporate model forest programs and priorities into the framework of an international Circumboreal initiative. Coniferous forests cover most of inland Alaska, Canada, Sweden, Finland, inland Norway and Russia, as well as parts of the northern continental United States, and northern Kazakhstan and Japan, making the Circumboreal forest part of the world’s largest terrestrial biome. As a first step the participants in the Circumboreal initiative have agreed that the umbrella theme would be “Global Change” with climate change vulnerability and resilience as subthemes. In addition, Canada’s model forests will participate in a number of collaborative projects that include the sharing of knowledge and information. Innovative approaches to a wide range of topics such as caribou, species at risk, invasive species, and sustainable forest management in the boreal forest are being developed. 2008 - 2009 Highlights The Canadian Model Forest Network surveyed all members regarding activities and interests in the boreal and the report was presented at the Global Forum 2008. The Canadian Model Forest Network participated in a Canadian workshop which help identify Canada`s position on circumboreal priorities. The Canadian Model Forest Network participated in a workshop in Finland and presented the Canadian position. |
