The Canadian Model Forest Network is a national forum where partners
from the country’s 14 Model Forests share their ideas and expertise in sustainable
forest management, with a fresh focus on community development and economic diversification
in the forest sector.
Canada’s Model Forests have been conducting forest sector research, developing
landscape management tools, and providing environmental education opportunities
from coast to coast since the program’s inception in 1992. These
efforts contribute significantly to each Model Forest region, and collectively
offer new opportunities to apply sustainable
forest management practices and initiatives on a national scale.
The similarities and differences in the way we approach forest management
and community sustainability have come to unite the country’s dedicated and diverse
Model Forest partners. The Canadian Model Forest Network is focusing on eight
initiatives that represent the most nationally significant issues facing our Model Forests and
Canada’s forest sector as a whole. Each initiative is championed by a local
Model Forest general manager and a team of national counterparts who apply their
shared knowledge to advance sustainable forest management, strengthen forest-dependent
communities, and diversify Canada’s forest sector.
Cutting-edge research, innovative education initiatives and practical,
hands-on workshops that aid in forest management planning and community development
are just some of the tools emerging from the Network’s national initiatives. Working
together towards shared goals, Canada’s Model Forests and their partners are further
strengthening our commitment to strong,
sustainable forests and communities.
