Special Project Areas

During Phase III of Canada’s Model Forest Program, several new sites joined the Canadian Model Forest Network (CMFN) as Special Project Areas. These areas were selected based on identified ecological and socio-cultural gaps in the existing CMFN.

The primary focus of the Special Project Areas initiative is to transfer knowledge and technology from Model Forests to these new locations. As with each Model Forest, partnerships are an important element of Special Project Areas. Each area has groups of partners representing a wide diversity of interests in the social, economic and environmental dynamics within their region and shares the Model Forest commitment to the sustainable management of Canada’s forests.

Each Special Project Area is affiliated with at least one Model Forest, and works closely with its Model Forest mentor to achieve goals and objectives. There are currently two Special Project Areas within the CMFN, with another having recently wrapped up its activities:

Another venture being supported by the CMFN includes the Yukon Project, which involves the Government of Yukon, Champagne and Aishihik First Nations and the McGregor Model Forest. This project focuses on several areas of concern to local stakeholders including: adaptation to climate change, community capacity related to sustainable forest management, building local partnerships, socio-economic indicators, and a traditional knowledge monitoring framework.
