About the Network > Secretariat
The Secretariat for the Canadian Model Forest Network is hosted by the Canadian
Forest Service (CFS). Staff are located in CFS headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario,
as well as in each of the five CFS regional centres: Pacific Forestry Centre in
Victoria, British Columbia; Northern Forestry Centre in Edmonton, Alberta;
Great Lakes Forestry Centre in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario; Laurentian Forestry
Centre in Sainte-Foy, Québec; and Atlantic Forestry Centre in Fredericton, New
Brunswick. The Secretariat is responsible for the overall administration of the
Model Forest Program, as well as for helping to link together Canada’s 11 Model
Forests. The Secretariat also oversees many of the Network’s national
activities, including special initiatives and projects, communications and
outreach, and linkages with national partner organizations. Regional members of
the Secretariat also serve on the Board of Directors of each Model Forest.

Stephen has worked as Model Forest Coordinator for the past 12 years. He
administers regional delivery of the program and serves on Board of Directors
and various committees for the Eastern Ontario and Lake Abitibi Model Forests
He has a research background in operational and biological sciences, having
worked previously for the Forest Engineering Research Institute of Canada
(Pointe-Claire office), the Ministry of Natural Resources and the Canadian
Forest Service (both in Sault Ste. Marie).

John Doornbos – Manager, Operational Programs Canadian Forest Service, Northern
Forestry Centre, Edmonton, Alberta
John manages the Operational Programs group
in Edmonton, which looks after delivery of the Model Forest Program in the
prairie provinces along with a number of other activities including First
Nations Forestry Program and Forest 2020. John has worked in the forest sector
with government, industry and in consulting for over 25 years.

Allister Hain – Programs Outreach Advisor Canadian Forest Service, Ottawa,
Ontario
Allister supports the outreach and communications activities of the
Canadian Model Forest Network from CFS Headquarters in Ottawa. He is a
professional communications specialist with 15 years experience in the
non-profit, public, government and corporate sectors. His areas of expertise
include: internal and external organizational and interpersonal communications;
change management planning and execution; organizational design; and
facilitation.

J. Dean Mills – Manager, Business Development & Marketing Canadian Forest
Service, Pacific Forestry Centre, Victoria, British Columbia
For the last
decade, Dean has been employed by the Canadian Forest Service within the
Pacific Region managing extension and technical transfer services for 130
scientists and facilitating regional/network client liaison. During this time,
he has produced a series of 34 technology transfer notes and a popular forest
science seminar program. In addition, he manages a number of regional programs
including Model Forests, Forest 2020, South Moresby Forest Replacement Account,
PFC Seminar Series, CEAA and the Forest Ecosystem Research Network of Sites.
During the previous decade, he acted as Secretariat for the Forest Development
Federal-Provincial Agreements I & II, the Yukon Forest Development
Agreement, and participated in a number of committees on intensive forest
management.

Michael Newman, R.P.F. – Manager, Saskatchewan Liaison Office Canadian Forest
Service, Northern Forestry Centre, Edmonton, Alberta
Michael manages the
overall operation of the Saskatchewan Office, coordinating the Prince Albert
Model Forest, First Nation Forestry Program, Forest 2020 Plantation
Demonstration and Assessment Initiative, and liaison with various industry and
government agencies. Michael has over 20 years of experience in forestry
including both federal and provincial government.

Bette
Reid - A/Manager, Program Outreach
Canadian
Forest Service, Ottawa , Ontario
Bette
manages outreach and communications activities for the Model Forest Secretariat,
coordinating with the Model Forest Communicators and Natural Resources Canada
Communications. Bette has been with the CFS for over 20 years, and brings
extensive experience in forestry programs, administration, database development,
science outreach, and S&T planning, reporting, and evaluation. Her experience
is rounded out with both a regional and national perspective in all of these
areas, with the first half of her career spent at Pacific Forestry Centre and
the second at CFS headquarters in Ottawa.

Jacques
Robert, F. Eng. – Model Forests Coordinator, Québec Region
Canadian Forest Service, Laurentian Forestry Centre, Sainte-Foy, Québec
Attached to the Laurentian Forestry Centre, Jacques has been with
the Model Forest Program since its launch in 1992 and liaises with the Bas-Saint-Laurent
Model Forest and the Waswanipi Cree Model Forest. Throughout his 30-year career,
Jacques has been primarily involved in forest management and silviculture programs,
in particular for forest landowners. The Network regularly benefits from Jacques’
passion and talent for photography.

Michael Slivitzky – Program Officer, Canada’s Model Forest Program Canadian
Forest Service, Ottawa, Ontario
Mike obtained a Forestry degree from the
University of New Brunswick in 1984, and a Master of Natural Resources
Management from the University of Manitoba in 1997. He has worked in New
Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Manitoba and British Columbia in the fields of forest
health, woodlots and strategic planning. He is currently helping coordinate the
Private Woodlot and Climate Change Strategic Initiatives of the CMFN.

Dean Toole, R.P.F. – Senior Forester, Model Forest Coordinator, Atlantic Region
Canadian Forest Service, Atlantic Forestry Centre, Fredericton, New Brunswick
Dean has been employed by the Canadian Forest Service in the Atlantic Region
since 1984. In 1993, he was promoted to the position of Model Forest Program
Coordinator for the Atlantic Region. In this capacity he works closely with
model forests in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, and
Strategic Project Areas in Prince Edward Island and Labrador. He also leads the
Model Forest Network Local Level Indicators Strategic Initiative and actively
participates in several other strategic initiatives.

Wendy Vasbinder – Program Officer, Canada’s Model Forest Program Canadian
Forest Service, Ottawa, Ontario
Wendy coordinates several Network committees,
is the project leader for the CMFN website, and assists in general program
administration. Prior to joining the Model Forest Program in 2003, she worked
in New Brunswick and British Columbia in the fields of protected areas planning
and forest certification. She has a M.Sc. in Natural Resource Management from
the University of Northern British Columbia and a Bachelors degree from McGill
University.

Adam Wellstead, M. A., M. Sc. (Forestry) – Manitoba Liaison Officer Canadian
Forest Service, Northern Forestry Centre, Edmonton, Alberta
Adam began his
career with the CFS in 1995 working on Foothills Model Forest social science
projects. His early research focused on the development of regional economic
impact models and understanding the role of tourism in forest dependent
communities. He joined the Northern Forestry Centre Policy and Liaison group in
2001 and assumed liaison responsibilities for the CFS in the Province of
Manitoba (Model Forest, FNFP, Forest 2020, Rural Secretariat, Manitoba
Intergovernmental Forest Working Group). Finally, Adam is completing his Ph.D.,
with an emphasis on policy process frameworks, in the Department of Renewable
Resources at the University of Alberta.

Lorne West, R.P.F. – Forestry Liaison Manager Canadian Forest Service, Northern
Forestry Centre, Edmonton, Alberta
Lorne is the regional coordinator for
Alberta, where he is responsible for the Foothills Model Forest, along with
other programs delivered by Natural Resources Canada. Lorne is the CFS
representative on the Foothills Model Forest Board of Directors and also serves
on the program implementation team and communications committee. Lorne has over
20 years of forestry experience with government, industry and professional
associations, including more recent activities in Alberta and NWT.
